In Lake Land there is something for everyone; whether it is culture, wandering in the nature, adventure activities, great food or true city life. What is for sure is that you will come back again and again, mysticism of these Finnish landscapes attracts strongly.

Sing of a black-throated diver, sound of the waves hitting the pier, sound of the motor of the small lake boat, sand rasping in your feet and happy noises of lively people. First visit in Lake Land leads normally to falling in love with this amazingly beautiful part of Finland, which is made of vast clear lakes, intricately splintered by islands, isthmuses and green spits.

Local Cuisine- Bon Appetit!

One of our specialities in Mikkeli region is fresh local food. Even during winter it is possible to find pure local food from bakeries and restaurants. Many farms and companies offering local food are also great tourism destinations. 

Mikkeli´s Market Hall: This historic place is a must-see for food lovers. Here you can find fresh baked good, meats, cheeses and cold cuts- with the friendly Savonian service! Market Hall is now in its new place, at renovated former bus depot, inside the new shopping centre Stella.  

Mikkeli market place: Is really popular place among the locals and visitors to gather and greet other people. Every months first saturday is market day and towards the summer many events takes place at this "heart of Mikkeli". During winter sellers offer more handcrafts than food but still market place is worth of visiting.

Lake Saimaa and different activities

Saimaa is the largest lake district in Europe, a labyrinth of almost 120 blue lakes and 14,000 green islands. Animals of all different shapes and sizes live in the waters and forests of Saimaa, from the majestic elk to the beautiful osprey. The most famous inhabitant of lake Saimaa is the endangered Saimaa Ringed Seal, of which an estimated 250 individuals still remain in the wild. If you get lucky you might see a glimpse of these sympathetic creatures as they soak up the sun on the rocks.

Mikkeli District offers awesome natural conditions for enjoying active holidays, includung for example hiking, cycling, swimming, boating, canoeing or berry picking.

Paddling: The numerous lakes, ponds, rapids and rivers are full of fish and also provide the perfect settings for a beautiful paddling expeditions. Few examples for paddling: Luonteri archipielago loop, Lake Härkäjärvi (www.toivolapalvelut.fi) and Squirrel route (www.oravareitti.net)

A little bit of culture?

May we offer a little bit of culture? Mikkeli city is a traditional army headquarters city. During the wartime in 1939-40 and in 1941-44, the Finnish army headquarters was located in Mikkeli. Today, we offer a range of museums in Finnish military history.

Not interested in military history? Try Mikkeli Art Museum. Named as the Regional Art Museum in 1981, Mikkeli Art museum houses a number of collections. On permanent display, Art Museum houses the Martti Airio art collection as well as the Johannes Haapasalo art and sculpture collection.

The Mikkeli region is situated in Southeastern Finland and constitutes the Region of South Savo. The South Savo region is dominated by Saimaa, the largest lake district in Europe. The region's largest urban centre is Mikkeli.

The City of Mikkeli is surrounded by 7 municipalities: Hirvensalmi, Juva, Kangasniemi, Mäntyharju, Pertunmaa, Puumala and Ristiina. This website presents information for visitors to all parts of Mikkeli district.
