Local Cuisine- Bon Appetit!

One of our specialities in Mikkeli region is fresh local food. Even during winter it is possible to find pure local food from bakeries and restaurants. Many farms and companies offering local food are also great tourism destinations.

Mikkeli´s Market Hall: This historic place is a must-see for food lovers. Here you can find fresh baked good, meats, cheeses and cold cuts- with the friendly Savonian service! Market Hall is now in its new place, at renovated former bus depot, inside the new shopping centre Stella.

Lake Saimaa and different activities

Saimaa is the largest lake district in Europe, a labyrinth of almost 120 blue lakes and 14,000 green islands. Animals of  different shapes and sizes live in the waters and forests of Saimaa, from the majestic elk to the beautiful osprey. The most famous inhabitant of lake Saimaa is the endangered Saimaa Ringed Seal, of which an estimated 250 individuals still remain in the wild. If you get lucky, you might see a glimpse of these sympathetic creatures as they soak up the sun on the rocks.

A little bit of culture?

May we offer a little bit of culture? Mikkeli city is a traditional army headquarters city. During the wartime in 1939-40 and in 1941-44, the Finnish army headquarters was located in Mikkeli. Today, we offer a range of museums in Finnish military history.

Not interested in military history? Try Mikkeli Art Museum. Named as the Regional Art Museum in 1981, Mikkeli Art museum houses a number of collections. On permanent display, Art Museum houses the Martti Airio art collection as well as the Johannes Haapasalo art and sculpture collection.
