The Astuvansalmi rock paintings in Ristiina are the most extensive prehistoric rock paintings in Scandinavia and date back 5000 years. The paintings include startling mystical symbols, images of elks and humans, and palm prints. In summertime you can hike to the paintings along a path that is approximately 3 kilometres in each direction. Alternatively, you can view the paintings from the lake aboard a scenic cruise.

Repovesi is a popular national park between Mäntyharju and Kouvola that is ideal for hiking and snowshoe expeditions.
