Saimaa is famous for its great fishing waters, promising anglers rich catches in summer and winter alike. Traditional cuisine in South Savo also relies heavily on fish, especially vendace, a small whitefish that is often fried in butter.

• In Finland licenses are not required for fishing through a hole in the ice or angling with a hook and line, as these are covered by everyman’s rights.

• Everyone between the ages of 18 and 64 who wants to fish with a lure must pay a state fishing management fee and have a lure fishing license.

• Fishing is one of the most popular hobbies in Finland. Eating fish too is an essential part of the Finnish way of life.

• The most popular form of winter fishing is fishing through a hole in the ice (“pilkkiminen”).
