One of our specialities in Mikkeli region is fresh local food. Even during winter it is possible to find pure local food from bakeries and restaurants. Many farms and companies offering local food are also great tourism destinations.
Mikkeli´s Market Hall: This historic place is a must-see for food lovers. Here you can find fresh baked good, meats, cheeses and cold cuts- with the friendly Savonian service! Market Hall is now in its new place, at renovated former bus depot, inside the new shopping centre Stella.
Mikkeli market place: Is really popular place among the locals and visitors to gather and greet other people. Every months first saturday is market day and towards the summer many events takes place at this "heart of Mikkeli". During winter sellers offer more handcrafts than food but still market place is worth of visiting.
Tertti Manor: This beautiful family-run manor serves international-quality cuisine conjured up from fresh local ingredients. All the grains, vegetables, herbs, berries and mushrooms used by the chefs are from the manor´s house own land. The restaurant is recognised as a member of the Chaine des Rotisseurs. Tertti manor is also part of the Charms of the Saimaa which has been awarded by the Finnish food and wine magazine "Gloria Ruoka& Viini" as the best food tourism destination in Finland in 2010.
Anttolanhovi: This beautiful hotel by the lake Saimaa serves delicious cuisine made from the very best local ingredients. The guests get to enjoy the clean flavours of the countryside prepared from ingredients sourced from small local farms.They offer popular barbecue evenings hosted by Markus Maulavirta, the ambassador of local food, which continue from Midsummer to mid-August.
Rapio Mill: is a historic and idyllic old mill in Juva (60 km from Mikkeli). In summertime the cafe offers delicious baked goods, while the boutique sells a wide range of natural mill products.
Vilee Puoti& Bistro: is a new restaurant in the centre of Mikkeli that offers delicious cuisine prepared from fresh local food. Menu varies evey day and the boutique also sells local and international delicacies.
Kyyhkylä manor: serves authentic Finnish flavours. The seasonal menu highlights fresh local ingredients that vary throughout the year.
Kenkävero: serves delicious buffets that are prepared mostly from fresh local ingredients. The fish is from Lake Saimaa, the meats from farms in Lakeland Finland and the herbs are from the vicarage´s own gardens. The bread is also freshly baked every day.
Restaurant Niinipuu: is a charming countryside restaurant on the island of Niinísaari in Puumala. here you can enjoy local homemade favourites, such as potato cakes, fresh rye bread, marinated smoked vendace and salmon on a plank.
Kyytselkä: produces mouth-watering farm-fresh ice cream for you to enjoy, truly unforgettable ice cream experience in the heart of Savonia! The ice cream can be purchased from the factory outlet in Virtasalmi, as well as from the boutiques at Kenkävero and Vilee Puoti& Bistro in Mikkeli.
