Lake Saimaa and different activities
Saimaa is the largest lake district in Europe, a labyrinth of almost 120 blue lakes and 14,000 green islands. Animals of different shapes and sizes live in the waters and forests of Saimaa, from the majestic elk to the beautiful osprey. The most famous inhabitant of lake Saimaa is the endangered Saimaa Ringed Seal, of which an estimated 250 individuals still remain in the wild. If you get lucky, you might see a glimpse of these sympathetic creatures as they soak up the sun on the rocks.
Mikkeli District offers awesome natural conditions for enjoying active holidays, includung for example hiking, cycling, swimming, boating, canoeing or berry picking.
Paddling: The numerous lakes, ponds, rapids and rivers are full of fish and also provide the perfect settings for a beautiful paddling expeditions. Few examples for paddling: Luonteri archipielago loop, Lake Härkäjärvi (www.toivolapalvelut.fi) and Squirrel route (www.oravareitti.net)
Hiking recommendations: The Astuvansalmi rock paintings (www.muinaismatkat.fi), Repovesi (www.outdoors.fi), Torikonpolku trail, Liehtalanniemi Museum Estate and nature trail and Urpola Nature centre.
Cruises on Lake Saimaa: from Mikkeli Harbour: M/S Jaarli (daily 17.6- 12.8.2012), scenic cruises (2hours): 12.30pm and 3pm. Lunch cruises to Kyyhkylä manor at 12.30pm.
From Puumala Harbour: Scenic cruises aboard M/S Kaunis Veera on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
